5 Christmas Movies That Your Family Will Want To Watch Every Year
Christmas is a time for family and friends. It’s a time when we want to be together, all snuggly warm and cozy. And what better way to spend time together than watching a fun movie!
Christmas movies appeal to all ages. Finding the right movie to watch with your entire family might be tricky. That’s why we put together this list of good family-friendly movies that everyone will enjoy. We watch a couple every single year!
A Christmas Story (1983) This hilarious slice-of-life movie set in a 1940s American family Christmas season will have you in stitches every time you watch it. Poor Ralphie has to contend with a whiny little brother, an unshakable bully, a cantankerous father, and a teacher who is not fond of boys who double-dog-dare other boys to stick their tongue on the flag pole. And, any mention of the wish for a BB gun, and everyone, including his understanding mother and even Santa, utters the refrain – “you’ll shoot your eye out!” But, all Ralphie wants for Christmas is a Red Ryder BB gun. What he most certainly did not want for Christmas were Pink Bunny Pajamas!
Elf (2003) What is a six foot elf doing in New York City? Finding his father and getting his name on the “Nice List” instead of the “Naughty List”, of course. Will Ferrell plays Elf, who when he was a baby, stow away by accident in Santa’s gift bag and ended up living at the North Pole being raised by the elves. When Buddy grows up, he realizes he is different from the “other” elves. When told about his father, he decided he would find him and fix him. Well, Buddy finds him alright, and a lot of other people that need fixing. Buddy realizes that not everyone was enjoying Christmas like they should, and certainly not like Buddy! James Caan and Bob Newhart are fabulous, as is Ferrell, which makes this movie not only funny but very well done.
It’s a Wonderful Life (1946) This “must see holiday movie” is worth more than a passing glance. James Stewart as George Bailey and Donna Reed as Mary Bailey offer wonderful performances that have lasted the test of time. Set in a small town, George has big dreams. Unfortunately, he has to put those dreams on hold when his family and his town needs him. When his life takes a seriously bad turn, he is sent a guardian angel, Clarence, who is on his first mission to Earth to earn his angel wings. With help from Clarence, and a little magic, George learns that even when things seem the darkest, having a loving family and good friends is all that really matters. At times funny, at times touching, this movie is a classic for all ages.
The Santa Clause (1994) If your son told you he was at the North Pole last night, would you believe him? If you’re Santa you would! When Scott Calvin, played by Tim Allen, surprised Santa on his rooftop, causing him to fall off, Scott unwillingly agreed to the Santa “clause” which made him the new Santa. The transformation from Dad to Santa took some time and some getting used to. Scott’s son, Charlie, knew it right away when Dad started getting jolly and round, and attracting all kinds of kids telling him what they wanted for Christmas. Then there’s Mom and her psychiatrist husband who don’t know quite how to handle these stories of Charlie’s. Flying off to the North Pole? The ending is sweet and will make you believe in miracles.
The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) Can The Muppets even make a bad movie? Not in my book! With The Great Gonzo as Charles Dickens and Michael Caine (in the flesh!) playing Ebeneezer Scrooge, you just can’t miss. This movie takes a lighthearted, humorous, and musical approach as a way of bringing this classic bit of literature to the younger set without being too scary or dramatic. Cleverly done and creative, but, then again, it’s The Muppets… would you expect anything less?
Pick out a few movies and make a date with your family this year to spend some time together. Get out your blankets and pillows, pop some popcorn, and meet your loved ones in front of the television! Enjoy your snuggle time!
