Batman Throughout The Ages

Many of the popular television characters have come and gone through the ages. There are few that can boast 80 years of popularity as Batman can. It’s no miracle that all of the Batman characters have been popular Halloween costumes each year. Several generations have become fans and each generation is captured by new toys and gadgets to collect. Batman first debuted back in 1939 as a popular super hero comic. It didn’t come to television until 1966. Over the years, other Batman characters have come and gone, but Robin, Batgirl and the Joker have remained popular throughout the years.

Part of the intrigue of the Batman series is the secrecy of Batman’s true identity. Out of costume, he is Bruce Wayne, the wealthy businessman who profited from real estate investments. As a child, Bruce Wayne’s parents were murdered, sparking his desire to avenge their deaths. Batman became the vigilante of Gotham, fighting the most dangerous threats to the city. Batman’s powers come from his intellect, not super human powers like other super hero characters. Batman only lasted 2 short years as a television series, but returned to tv as a cartoon. Batman came to the movie screens in 1989 and been a blockbuster hit with each new sequel.

The introduction of a female counterpart for Batman was spurred by debate over a homosexual relationship between Batman and Robin. First, Batwoman was introduced. Later, Batgirl came on as her sidekick. Both of these characters were eliminated, but another character later became Batgirl. Barbara Gordon was a much more popular Batgirl. She is the daughter of police commissioner James Gordon. Over the years, several different characters were introduced as Batgirl. Batgirl lasted about 8 years in the comics, but returned to the movie screens in 1999.

Out of all of the devious villains who have appeared throughout Batman’s history, the Joker remains one of the most popular. He also makes the list of the top 100 villains across the board. He played a significant role in many of Batman’s tragedies. His clown-like appearance was the result of falling into a barrel of chemicals, resulting in pale white skin, bright red lips and green hair. His character was formulated after the Joker playing card. True to his name, the crimes he carries out are usually with weapons that are used to play jokes on people: a squirting acid flower, bladed playing cards and a buzzer that electrocutes people.

Between 1989 and 1999 four movie sequels were released, all becoming blockbusters. More recently, in 2005 and 2008, two new sequels hit the movie screens. The most recent, Batman: The Dark Knight hit the $400 million mark faster than any other movie. The continued success of the movies has kept Batman alive amongst viewers of all ages. With blockbuster movies come all kinds of toys and video games, tapping into the market of today’s children. It’s no wonder the Batman character costumes continue to be popular.
