Coping With Morning Sickness While Caring for Small Children

Coping with morning sickness is difficult to deal with on its own, but when you also have small children in your home, it can be even more difficult. In order to make it through this time, you will have to discover some ways to keep your kids busy so that you can get rest that you need to feel better.

Not only is morning sickness playing a role right now, but you may also feel emotional ups and downs as well as extreme fatigue. Fatigue is due to the load placed on your body by this new little being as well as the change in your hormones levels. Both of these situations can make dealing with your small children more difficult. Realize that these are normal feelings and if you find yourself especially moody or weepy, that it will pass.

If you’re feeling particularly tired and need to lay down, find a place that your children can be close to you. For instance, if you lay in your bed, make sure there is a spot next to you on the floor. If you want to lay in the living room, a recliner can keep you close. Or, if you have very young children, put a mattress on the floor of their room and shut the door so that they stay safely inside.

Next, choose some activities that they can do while you rest. You want to keep them busy for at least 15 minutes at a time doing things like this:

Jigsaw puzzles – Make sure the piece count is appropriate for their age.

Coloring Books – Have several on hand to keep their interest and you may want to invest in washable crayons.

Play-Doh – This can get messy, but will hopefully keep them busy enough for you to catch a nap.

Cars – Get a big bucket full of them and dump them on the floor and let them have at it.

Books – Read a story if you’re able or let your child read the story to you.

Movies – Rent a couple of children’s movies and let them watch them. Although they may not be able to sit through the entire thing, hopefully it will allow you to relax for awhile.

Although coping with morning sickness is more difficult when you’ve got other little ones, there are a few activities you can try to keep them busy. Remember to keep them close to you so that they are safe, and if it becomes too bad, try to find someone who may be able to take them for you so you can get some sleep.
