Duke College Football Update
David Cutcliffe pulled off a smart coaching choice by quickly announcing Sunday that Thad Lewis might be his quarterback for this Saturday’s showdown with the Kansas Jayhawks.
Although I have only one dilemma with the means Cutcliffe went about things. It basically is such a trifling thing and I was reluctant to even bring it up, although felt compelled to do so.
Cutcliffe revealed Lewis was one of several athletes who had contracted the flu and missed practice time.
If you tell me Lewis is a hero, I am fine with that, mainly because I don’t have a choice and you may care less what my belief is. Although there’s furthermore the fact that you’re the head coach/quarterback authority and understand a bundle more than I will ever understand about that position.
There is no need to tell me Lewis isn’t one hundred percent.
He clearly claimed he did not want to create a quarterback controversy, but, as the majority of people understand, qb controversies 9 times outside ten are created by enthusiasts and media, not personnel.
If a quarterback controversy manifests because of Renfree’s good performance and Lewis’ not so great performance then deal with it if the questions turn up.
While I agree with his choice and swiftness of it he might have opened up a undersized door for criticism of his starter.
If Lewis doesn’t play well at Kansas then Cutcliffe will undoubtedly face questions about whether or not Lewis is 100 percent and if he isn’t, why isn’t Renfree playing in the game?.
So for the coach’s sake I hope Lewis steps up and is victorious or has a nice game, because the last thing the team needs right now in the wake of the great motivator of besting Army is a controversy.
Just ask Coach K if you are looking for a second opinion. He has been forced to cope with 1 or two of situations like this one.
