Employing Howard Gardner’s techniques in Preschool Education
Research shows early childhood education is critically important to the development of a happy, healthy adult. Preschool programs have been shown to be a great aid in preparing students for school and our government is recognizing this by putting more and more money into head start programs. With private school programs growing the question becomes what is the best method to educate these children.
One of the highly recognized and most well-respected forms of learning for preschoolers is the Montessori form of education. Students are not restricted to a standard form of learning, whereas they are free to explore learning for themselves in a child lead learning environment. After seeing substantial popularity of the Montessori education, Dr. Gardner went out to do this own research. As an Harvard University psychologist Dr. Gardner concluded that each child has their own personal uniquely different intelligences. He finished his study by learning that each person has their own cognitive profile which creates their uniqueness. The seven intelligence is what he called our own profiles; as he described in his book Frames of Mind.
Leaning for preschoolers in a guided process and many of the top preschools will acknowledge this. Therefore, they will create education opportunities that will help garner their strongest qualities. Many times when a child learns through smaller groups, as opposed to larger groups they tend to work in a coinciding manner. If a child likes to read, they will be encouraged to do more reading. There are a variety type of skills any child or preschoolers may show favor to and they should be encouraged to do more to boost their confidence.
As shown by both Dr. Gardner & Dr. Montessori, each child learns at their own individual level and everything where everything is not right for every student. To insure that students succeed in the classroom environment, many of the top preschools in the United States are implementing a variety of the teaching methods described by Dr. Gardner and Dr. Montessori. Some of the best methods provided by both are currently being employed by this critical research at Brilliance Preschool & Academy. From viewing their classroom curriculum and through articles from their blog, you will find their belief in this unique and highly effective form of learning.
The emphasis is not as much on the quality of work but what the student has learned in the process of completing the assignment. The teachers are “trained in the philosophy of Communication, Creativity, Critical Thinking, Character and Confidence through mandatory staff development”.
