A Local’s List Of Travel Destinations To Go When You Need To Get Out Of NYC
If you live in New York, then you know being here on a summer weekend is no fun. Sure, a picnic in the park is nice, but don’t even think about going down to SoHo. You will be eaten alive in a sea of Europeans. If you want to get out of the city, here are some fun options.
Just drive north. It doesn’t matter where, the further you drive north, the more beautiful it gets. Find a little hotel on a placid lake in Connecticut, or stay at the Castle on the Hudson for a luxurious weekend vacation.
Fire Island makes for a very fun weekend. Whether you go to Saltaire, Kismit, Ocean Beach or somewhere else, it is a great time and a great place to let loose. The lack of cars make Fire Island a special place.
The obvious choice for many New Yorkers when it comes to weekend getaways is to go to the Hamptons. Located out east on the south fork of Long Island, the Hamptons is a little alcove of wealth that provides for very fun summer weekends.
The Hamptons is broken up into several towns, but some of my favorites are West Hampton, South Hampton and Bridgehampton. These “villages” have the best towns to walk around.
If you are looking to go to Long Island, but the Hamptons aren’t your scene, look into the North Fork of Long Island. Towns like Greenpoint and Orient point are wonderful weekend destinations. The wine out there is excellent, as are the baked goods at Briermeir farm.
Cape Cod is another great option to get away for the weekend. You can take the train from Penn Station up to Boston and then its about a 45 minute ride from there. Or just endure the 3 hour drive.
