Helping the Community with Tom’s Shoes
Best known for holding shoe drops in impoverished countries, Tom?s Shoes is now helping the community by holding those same shoe drops State side. Tom?s Shoes was given this chance to help last year as well. It looks like they had so much fun helping their own community that they came back for more.
Tom?s Shoes was started in 2006 after Blake Mycoskie took a trip to Argentina. On his trip he realized many of the children did not own any shoes, and he wanted to change that. He came up with the idea for Tom?s Shoes one-for-one motto with hope he could build a business that with equality profitable and charitable.
After several shoe drops to third world countries Blake Mycoskie considered a shoe drop in the United States. He realized that even though poverty in the United States doesn?t necessarily mean a lack of shoes, it often means worn out shoes, shoes that are either too tight or too big, and sharing shoes with siblings. What better way to give back to the community than provide children with proper shoes using the one-for-one motto.
This year Tom?s Shoes went down to New Orleans with a total of 33 volunteers in tow. They were all united in one common goal; to give away over 2,000 pairs of shoes at five different schools in the surrounding area. It was a goal that the crew had no trouble achieving.
Several of the children commented that their favorite part of the day was customizing the Tom?s Shoes. Tom?s Shoes set up tables and spread out markers so the children could color on their Tom?s however they wanted. This added the extra special something to the children?s shoes, so they can make their shoes personal and unique.
Blake Mycoskie has been able to help improve his own community as well as the communities in many other countries. You too can help the community using the one-for-one motto.
