Homework Tips for Kids And Teens

"How Do I Get My Kids to Respect Me?"

Homework has been a perennial headache for kids and teens as well as for their parents. Following are some tips to make homework time more effective and enjoyable for all concerned.

Most kids love to talk and they love to have someone listen to them. As you sit around the dinner table in the evening, ask your kid “what happened to you today” and “what was the most fun you had today?” It is important to keep it light. Never ask your kid “how was your day today?” They will always say “fine”…particularly Tweens (ages 8-12). If you can tell your kid is having a bad day, then it would be inappropriate to ask “what happened to you today” because they will not want to talk about it. They want to forget about it. Try your best NOT to “dish” out punishment at the dinner table. Any punishment connected with food and dining together may bring negative responses in the future for your kids.

It is the responsibility of the parents to discover what decisions their kids are making at school. Don’t completely trust your kid at this age. You can trust they are doing the best they know how; but, they still have a lot to learn about making their own decisions.

Make a parent-teacher appointment and ask their teacher for their observations relating to your kid making decisions at school. Don’t let the teacher ramble on relating to other behaviors (unless you want them to) stay on your agenda item for this meeting which is what decisions does my kid have to make at school during the day.

You’r kid will hate you for doing this. I remember Caroll O’Conner who played Archie Bucker for years said to the media and to parents when he lost his grown-up son to drugs: “Get in the face of your kids and protect them no matter what you have to do”.

It is like my grandson said to me once: “if my parents tell you anything I do wrong – just throw up your hands cover your ears and say ‘I don’t want to hear about it’”. We need to talk to other adults about our kids to our family and friends because it helps. However, make sure your kids are out of “ear-shot”. Show a little respect.
