How Kids Play Has Changed
I can recall many games from my childhood, some being very creative whereas some other ones were quite dangerous and risky. However, the ones me and my friends liked the most where those that were adrenaline-high. The bigger the danger or the uncertainty, the more enjoyment and excitement we were getting.
The first one I can recall, which certainly was not very safe, was some sort of chasing each other around the town on a bicycle. We had to split into two teams, the first team had five minutes to cycle away and the second one had to find them within one hour. Locating someone wan’t enough as that person would have to be taken out of the game by actually being caught!. So that could end up in crazy chasings all around the town, ignoring passersby’s, cars, traffic lights, pedestrian streets, old ladies etc. Sometimes we were getting injured too but nothing really serious happened.
The best one, however, was ‘exploration’. We were entering abandoned private properties in order to come across some big discovery or secret that we wouldn’t share with any adult. Getting into that huge old mansion was our biggest achievment and it took as some days in order to explore every single room and floor. It really was like a massive, endless labyrinth and we were totally scared as eerie sounds were coming from all over. Of course we had our own fearls and many times we were getting too paranoid about non existent security guys patroling the place.
Once, we broke into an abandoned warehouse that was owened by an aviation company which had gone bankrupt. In the various compartments, which were not totally empty, we could find some many unusual objects. Most of those object were looking really weird and hostile as no one had ever come across things like fan accessories, electrical components and coaxial connectors.
I definitely miss those times and I do not think that kids nowadays can experience so intense and high adrenaline emotions, sitting in the living room playing computer games all day.
