Is It Safe For Children To Quaff Coffee

Before I begin the argument on the subject of whether children should in fact be permitted to drink coffee (and hence caffeine) it’s important that I that I’m not a physician, or a medical authority and can offer only my advice based on my experience and preconceived notions about the world and human mind. Every man, woman, and child is allowed their own opinion, but I feel like much of what is placed on the internet runs a risk of being falsely thought to be fact when it should be treated as opinion.

Now that we have gotten that out of the way… I don’t think that as a rule caffeine, coffee, or caffeine containing substances should be given to pre-adolescents, but there may be a caveat that I’ll get to in a little bit. Coffee is a drug. It’s one of the most societally accepted drugs in the world, but a drug nonetheless. I am of the opinion that allowing kids to become dependent on a any form of substance may teach them a subsequent pattern of behaviors that can create a path into later substance problems.

I believe that if people looked at their caffeine use realistically, and read the science that exists out there they might be alarmed to discover a few things. Chiefly among these would be the fact that after a few weeks of habitual drinking caffeine no longer provides a boost, but instead simply brings your overall energy state back to what they would be if you weren’t experiencing withdrawal.

This is true of the majority of substances that cause any kind of crash, but I choose to emphasize it in regards to caffeine because it’s so often overlooked as a drug of potential abuse. Most people believe that the caffeine from coffee is fundamentally different due to instinctual group-think, when in reality is quite similar to other stimulants. The main difference is that coffee may have some health benefits. It reportedly reduces the chance of stroke in females, for example. In fact, a drug called caffeinol which is a cocktail of ethanol and caffeine has demonstrated scientific merit for even reducing the damage from stroke.

The singular caveat in regards to boys and girls drinking gourmet coffee is that it is probably a superior choice than a drug as powerful as Ritalin. Both of these pharmaceuticals are very strong as stimulants and since the effects of caffeine are indeed similar, but simply less dramatic it could serve a preferable substitute.
