Making Money Ideas For Kids

Making money ideas for kids is being discussed just about everywhere right now. The economy has been down too long, taking a lot of jobs with it. Available jobs are being filled by people laid off from their regular jobs, making the job market even tighter, especially for kids.

The reality is that below 16 years of age there just aren’t that many decent jobs a kid can get. It might be because of workplace laws, insurance concerns or just plain lack of experience that most employers are not hiring kids. During the school year young people are not that available to work at all except afternoons and weekends, which makes it even harder still to find meaningful employment.

Mowing lawns, paper routes, summer work with a relative or paid chores for neighbors have been the traditional methods of making money ideas for the average kid. They don’t require much in the way of cash to get going, but they also don’t return much either. They also require a lot of physical work in most cases, which doesn’t appeal to your average kid these days.

We scratched our head and searched for some kind of employment that would not only have the possibility of providing more money, but also be something today’s kids might like to tackle. After searching around, we think we’ve come up with two good candidates.

Taking photographs for fees might be one making money for kids idea. This could be a family project because it’s suited to nearly everyone, it could be fun to work together and I believe at least the account holder must 18 (Mom or Dad for instance).

Go to the Internet and do a search for stock photography websites like istockphoto.com. Enter the sites and get to know their rules and regulations first, then study some of the other photos there to see what people are buying. I should have said “leasing”, not buying. You never lose ownership of your work. The idea is that after you upload photos people like ad agencies, web designers and graphic artists crawl through these kind of sites every day looking for fresh content to use. When they find it they pay a fee to download (borrow) and you get around 20% as a commission. This making money idea for kids won’t make you rich, but it sure can help.

Kids seem to have an innate ability to operate electronic equipment so operating a digital camera will be a snap for them. So turning this into a making money for kids project won’t include much of a learning curve at all. Young people also possess a fresh and uncluttered mind that may well lead them to take photos you or I would never think of. They may post to the website content that is unlike what others are doing. They may get noticed for this by the potential buyers and start getting paid for the downloads.

Working with pets might be another making money idea for kids. I’m talking vertically integrating here. From dog walking to pet sitting to grooming and even poop scooping if possible. There are over 60 million dog owners in this country and most dote on their pets, especially dogs. Take advantage of this phenomenon by getting your kid involved. Dog owners will spend on their pet’s well being before their own sometimes.

Pet sitting and pet walking are mainly about doing an every day thing responsibly. No special skills required, just be timely and respectful of property. Word of your good service can spread quickly and serve as a base for your other service offerings.

Offering dog grooming can be as complicated or uncomplicated as you make it as a making money idea for kids. Offering just a bath and comb-out can be a worthy service that many dog owners will find invaluable. Avoiding the grooming shop routine of appointments, drive- to and drive-from commutes, plus the wet-dog-in-the-car hassle should prove attractive to many prospective clients. Additional services like actually trimming the hair can be offered after getting some additional training.

Groomers earn pretty good money these days and it could be another facet of your niche of pet care as a making money idea for kids. Currently pet owners are saddled with the routine of making appointments, then the hassle of delivering and picking up the animal from the shop (usually in rush hour traffic). Offering an in-home grooming service could prove very attractive to many pet owners. You could pick simple and advanced grooming skills from websites, books or videos and add to your list of services.

Ugly as it may seem, poop scooping is a valued service in many places and could be a great addition to your list of offerings as a making money ideas for kids scheme. Double income homes and those with busy schedules don’t have the time or choose not to do this chore themselves and would be more than willing to pay for someone to do it for them. Just get hold of a three foot long scoop, a hotel-style dust pan and some plastic bags and you’re in business. Most scoopers schedule for weekly pickup and arrive on the same day each week.

Well, it seems like these two job concepts might work for us. Can you think of anymore making money ideas for kids?
