Ralphie Isn’t The Only One Who’ll Shoot His Eye Out

The saying “You’ll shoot your eye out” is one of American pop culture’s favorite quotes from the movie “A Christmas Story”. Ralphie asks his parents for an air rifle, and once he got one, he almost shot his eye out an definitely broke his glasses.

While Ralphie’s parents were right about that, your parents were probably wrong about telling you that you’d go blind if you sit too close to the television. This is actually a myth. However, sitting too close to the television can cause hearing loss.

On the contrary, sitting for a long period of time in front of the television and playing video games, or being on the computer for a long period of time can cause dryness and irritation in the eyes.

Staring at the computer for too long can cause headaches and fatigue. But it’s not just bad for your eyes; it can be bad for your entire body too causing stiffness and cramps.

Does your back ever hurt when you’ve sat in front of a computer screen too long? Are you using good posture in general? Are children paying attention to what is going on around them when they have spent hours in front of a screen? Video games can be straining on their eyes.

Sitting too long doing anything can cause people to become less active and lazy. It’s not good for keeping a good weight level and it’s not good for the body to not be as active. Most people play video games for way too long which can cause lots of physical problems.

Not only are our children not running around and getting the exercise they require on a daily bases, they are also being exposed to high volumes of electromagnetic energy. Every electronic device puts out a certain amount of electromagnetic energy that is absorbed through the human body.

This type of over exposure for long periods of time can cause biological problems. Studies and physics show that the body absorbs electromagnetic energy which is conducted through our nervous system. Imagine what that could be doing to your child after four to five hours a day, three hundred and sixty five days a year for the next fifteen to twenty years?

So your mother was right about sitting in front of the television, almost. You may not go blind but you can strain your eyes and cause your body a bunch of other issues because of the electromagnetic energy that these kinds of items give off.

They may not be shooting their eye out with the Red Ryder air rifle, but they are actually harming their eyes by playing video games for long periods of time. I know I didn’t go blind by sitting too close to the TV. I have a hard time hearing, and my back is mores hunched over than before. I do wear glasses due to the natural aging process. However, I never spent more than one hour a night in front of television and I still have both eyes.

Dorthy Weatherbush tells her kids to be careful no matter what they are doing. Whether they are putting Avery Labels on envelopes or playing with their toys. Avery Labels can cause paper cuts, and too many toys can be dangerous if left on the floor, which means you could put your eye out!
