There’s something about being honest to the important people around you about your true sexuality. It tremendously enhances your sense of worth as, finally, everyone will see you as who you really are. However, if you don’t wish to do it for other people, at least do it for yourself.

Coming out of the closet is like being born into the world once more. But this time, without the strain and terror of keeping something huge a secret to yourself. There’s nothing fun about leading a secret identity. Soon enough it’s bound to negatively affect your daily life.

Being a Role Model

What if someone else immediately around you is secretly leading a gay life? What if he really doesn’t want to be closeted anymore? When you come out, your honesty and courage doing so will be like a symbol of hope for him. You become a role model saying: “It’s going to be okay.”

Some negative reactions and changes arising are quite understandable. This is especially true among parents and close friends who are likely to get shocked by your revelation. But everything will heal up soon enough. In time, your family and friends will learn to accept you for who you really are as a person.

As with any decision you make in life, there are certain risks involved in openly identifying yourself as a gay man or woman. Some relationships may be permanently changed by your coming out. If you think the benefits of coming out offset the potential risks, then go ahead and be honest about it.
