The Baseball League’s Fight Against Drug Abuse
The rise of the so called super athletes has been phenomenal over the last ten years. Many sports people men and women have excelled in their sports and set new records. This however pails into insignificance when you also consider the growing number of them that have either been proved or accused of using drug enhancements to help them to set these records.
How then is it possible to compare the performances of today’s top class athletes with those of yesteryear? The athletes of years ago never had the choices of today’s enhancing drugs to help them attain their status as the top athletes of the day.
There are a lot of fans that have become disillusioned with today’s stars taking drugs to try to perform better. Many fans of sports such as baseball have now decided to boycott the sport all together.
Although the latest facts and figures show that Baseball attendances are only down by about 2 percent it is a major concern. This is mainly due to the fact that many other sporting events have seen increased attendances. No league wherever it is wants to see their attendances dropping.
This is one of the main reasons why Bud Selig and his science advisors in Major League Baseball are trying to formulate a blood test to test for human growth hormone. Selig along with many others feel that HGH should be banned completely in sport.
Currently Major League Baseball has banned this but only has an honor system in place. There is no actual test in place for the abusers of this. Needless to say the honor system is not the best way to control this.
It is just common sense that if an athlete is prepared to take drugs to enhance their performance, that he will also be prepared to lie about using it too.
Still at least we can look back with fondness at yesteryears athletes, and all that they managed to achieve on their own merits without any false additional stimulus.
