The Dangers Of Roller Shoes
I find it startling and a bit strange to see young children skating around stores these days. They are able to skate in what look like regular shoes, because the shoes have wheels in the heels. When a child suddenly starts to skate, they dart about quickly and I can’t tell where they are heading.
Now, they don’t realistically go terribly fast, and obviously don’t have to wear helmets. But how safe is this? They are “heeling,” because of a popular brand name for shoes with wheels in the heels. If yo do a little research, you find out that these wheel shoes are a big reason why kids end up in the emergency room these days.
There are plenty of reasons why this trend is resulting in scads of injuries. Wheeled anything, used without a helmet, is just begging for a major head injury.
Part of the problem is speed, but that’s not all there is to worry about. There’s also the problem of navigation. It’s hard to steer in these things, and if a child is heeling through a mall sooner or later they are going to run into something!
These shoes, which seem so innocent, often lead to broken bones and dislocated joints. It’s human nature to stretch out your arm to try to stop your fall when you begin falling. Not surprisingly the wrist and lower arm are often injured by kids who are heeling. They also can wind up with elbow dislocations and skull fractures, both serious injuries.
Before you buy these shoes, stop to think for a minute. Picture kids using the shoes, or watch them at it the next time you have the opportunity. Picture what happens when the children are using the shoes in a crowded area.
Do the kids pay attention to other people and take care to avoid them? Nope. And it’s not the result of inappropriate parenting, it’s just that these are kids.
The effect is still the same. When you have young kids darting in and out and weaving through crowds, sooner or later they are going to encounter someone who has mobility issues. An elderly person or someone with a physical impairment may be unable to move out of the way in time, and both parties in this situation can end up hurt.
Sure, these shoes can be a lot of fun. Not all kids who use them end up hurt. Still, do a bit of research and know the risks before you decide whether to purchase a pair.
